Intro:

Even if you're an outdoor climber, in Belgium it's often hard to climb outside regularly because the best crags can be hundreds of kilometres away. Indoor boulder gyms make it possible to train several times per week. Routes are set by route-setters who design the movement and difficulty.

Route-setters:

Route setters are the creative minds behind every climbing or bouldering route. They determine the difficulty, movements, and character of each line on the wall. With knowledge of technique, safety, and body mechanics, they design challenges that are both fun and educational. Thanks to their work, climbing remains varied, surprising, and constantly evolving.

Each bouldering gym works with its own team of route setters, each with a recognizable style and specialty — from dynamic jump moves to technical slab problems. These setters are rarely tied to just one gym; they usually create routes in multiple bouldering gyms across Belgium.

In addition, there are specialized setting teams such as Walltopia and Pitouverture, with perhaps the most well-known example being Atari Climbing. These are groups of highly experienced setters with over twenty years of climbing experience, who are also part of the national setting team. They are responsible for the boulders at the Belgian Championship and other major competitions.
